Music

At Windmill, we love the idea that one of our children could grow up to be a musical inspiration to others.

As is our motto for all curriculum areas, we aim to 'spot and nurture talent'.

If we don't give the opportunities for children's talents to be spotted, we won't be able to nurture those talents, so as part of our Deep and Diverse Experiences, we ensure every child in Year 3 learns to play a musical instrument. Because of the expertise of our specialist music teacher, Mrs Helen Jackson, we focus on stringed instruments: namely violins and cellos.

Year 3 children's music curriculum is based around stringed instruments throughout the year.  This gives us the opportunity to notice which children have particular interest and/or aptitude for playing an instrument, and we select 12 children to 'sponsor' to continue receiving tuition in Year 4.  We assess again at the end of Year 4 and Year 5 to see if the children continue to show interest/aptitude and therefore merit our continued investment in them as musicians.

It is possible to receive tuition for other musical instruments in school.  This can be free of charge for families in receipt of Free School Meals.  Please enquire at the office for more information.
